Latex paint is a water-based paint. It can be diluted with water unlike oil paints which can only be diluted with oil based thinners.Latex paint is thicker than oil paint, so it must be thinned to use with spray guns or dispensers that are used to distribute a thin layer of paint on the surface.Diluting paint requires the right care and maintenance to achieve the desired consistency. This article helps you do that.

Steps
-
Open the paint can.
-
Pour the paint into a large bucket. If you need to paint a large space, use a 5-gallon bucket for this project.
-
Add 1/2 cup (118 ml) of water for every 3.5 gallons of paint you use.
-
Use a stick to mix the paint with water. Stop when you think the paint is well diluted.
-
Use a ladle or spoon to pour the paint into a funnel. If it flows well in the funnel then it will also be good for the spray nozzle.
-
Add more water slowly if it doesn't flow well into the funnel, until you reach the right consistency.
- Pour 1/8 cup (30 ml) of water for every 3.5 liters into a large enough container.Slowly add water while mixing, until you get the right consistency.

-
Test the paint. Use a dispenser or brush to test the paint on the material.Let it dry and reapply another coat to check better.
- Paint that is too diluted tends to drip when applied. On the other hand, paint that is too thick tends to have a consistency like the peel of an orange.Test the paint before applying it to a large surface.

Advice
- Wash the nozzle or brush immediately after you're done. You can wash them easily with soap and water, however they dry quickly and therefore it will be more difficult to clean them later if you have not done so before.
- If you want to increase the life of your paint for exterior projects, you can use a commercial thinner with a strength-enhancing agent. It is best to buy a thinner from the same brand as the paint as these have already been tested together.
- Apply more than one coat of latex paint to improve adhesion.
