Steps
-
Prepare everything you need to build the dock. You can find a detailed list at the bottom of this article in the "Things You'll Need" section.
-
Go to the place where you intend to build the pier and bring everything you need with you. Get as close to the water as possible:once assembled, the pontoon will be much heavier and difficult to move.
-
Make a square with the 5x20 cm and 2.5 m long strips and secure them with screws. Position the strips so that the structure has a final measurement of 2.5x2.5 m.Use the short 10x10cm ones to check that the corners are right.Wait to fix them, you may need to make small adjustments.
-
Prepare the barrels. Make sure all openings are closed properly and apply a layer of silicone around and on top of the cap to prevent leaks.
-
Add support to the structure you have built. Measure the center of the square.Once you have found it, place a 5x10 cm, 2.5 m long strip as a support.
-
Place four more strips parallel to the central support axis, two on one side and two on the other. Turn the drum on its side and place it on top of the supports.Move them left and right as needed until the stem remains resting without touching the ground.Mark the precise point and fix the strips.Repeat this operation on both sides.
-
Make a perpendicular support on top of what you just built. Place the drums on the bottom supports and measure where they end up.Then, use two 5x10 cm strips positioned perpendicular to create additional support. Finally, secure the strips with screws.
-
Screw the 10x10 cm strips to ensure a more secure hold. Place the corner brackets at each intersection of the support.
-
Place the eye screws on the support strips of the barrels. Place 2 on each side.Place all 4 drums between the supports with the eye screws and tie them securely with string.Tie a knot in the first screw, bring the rope to the other side and pass it through the second, then diagonally through the third until you reach the last ring.Tie a nice tight knot to secure the stem and repeat the same process with the other three.
-
Turn the dock structure upside down.
-
With the help of one or two people, carry the pontoon to shore and temporarily tie it to something so you don't risk losing it while you make the finishing touches.
-
Build the upper part of the dock. Place the 2.5x15 cm and 2.5 m long boards and leave 1-2 cm of space between one and the other.Prevent them from spilling over the edge of the structure. With the help of nails and a hammer, secure the boards from both sides.Try climbing on it:you should feel like the structure is solid and stable.
-
Push the dock completely into the water. You can adjust the distance from the lake shore by increasing or decreasing the safety rope to which it is attached.Advertising
Advice
- Build the dock on a level surface to keep it level.
- Ask a friend or two for help submerging the pontoon in the water.
