Things you will need
- 2 two-litre bottles of soft drink
- Sturdy twine or fishing line
- Sturdy utility knife or knife
- Duct tape or superglue
- Bread or bread crumbs
- Sand, earth or stones
Steps
-
Cut the base of one of the two bottles. Make the incision about 5-8 cm from the bottom, discarding the base and keeping the rest of the bottle, including the cap.
- While the best tool for this job is a utility knife, you can also use a serrated knife.
-
Make 10-15 small holes in the sides of the bottle. This way, water can enter the trap. For this purpose, you can use either the tip of a knife or a red-hot nail (the heat will melt the plastic).Arrange the holes (no larger than one centimeter) along the middle circumference of the bottle.
-
Thread the line through two holes, tying it to create a sort of handle. Simply slide the thread or fishing line through two holes and then tie the ends.By doing this, you will be able to remove the trap in the future.
-
Cut off the top of the other bottle. Make the incision where the neck connects to the "body" of the bottle. In the end, you will have a cylindrical element and a tapered portion.Keep this one and throw away the rest.
-
Insert the top portion of one bottle into the base of the other. This way, you create an access for the minnows who will enter the trap through a "funnel" and get stuck in the body of the second bottle.
-
Secure the two elements with adhesive tape. Alternatively, you can poke holes in both bottles with a hot nail, to melt and join the plastic.
-
Cut a slice of bread and push it into the trap. The bread represents the bait and a bite two or three centimeters in size is enough. You can also add sand, dirt, or rocks to help the device sit at the bottom of the stream and prevent it from being swept away by the current.
-
Place the trap at the bottom of the stream. Minnows have a tendency to swim in schools in shallow water with little current;Often, it is possible to see them from the shore, so try to place the homemade device in an area where there is a high probability of capture.
- Push the trap slightly below the surface of the water, so that it fills and sinks.
-
Return the next day to get the minnows. They should have entered the body of the trap through the narrow funnel-shaped entrance made with the neck of the bottle, without finding their way out.Unscrew the cap of the bottle to extract the prey, then put it back and place the trap in its place to use it again.Advertising
