The Vaia dragon, the gigantic work of Land art that was destroyed in an arson fire last summer, has been reborn:the artist Marco Martalar has rebuilt it, twice the size of the previous one, and announces:"It is forged from ashes"

BOLOGNA – The Vaia dragon is back.Or rather "he regenerated“:The news was given by the artist Marco Martalar who in recent days has been immortalized on social media with the new (enormous) sculpture of the Vaia dragon, reconstructed after the previous dragon was destroyed in the fire set intentionally a year ago, on the night between 22 and 23 August 2023.And the new dragon brings with it the story of the previous dragon. In fact, we read in the presentation, “the pieces of wood are black, deliberately burned by the artist“.This is why he talks about 'regeneration'.The new sculpture is also located in Lavarone, on Alpe Cimbra. It can already be visited, though the official inauguration will be on July 1st.It was rebuilt thanks to a very popular fundraiser, started the same night as the fire by the mayor of Lavarone. The new work, created with the technique of Land art, is more than double the size of the previous one:it is indeed 15 meters long, while the previous one stopped at seven. It is “the world's largest dragon sculpture,” says the artist. And on social media he thanks "Tiziano Bonollo and Pino Bufera" for helping him in the creation.

“THE NEW DRAGON FORGED FROM THE ASHES OF THE OLD”

The artist Martalar from the very first moments after the fire (despite the disappointment and great sorrow) he said that the dragon Vaia would return. Here are the words with which he spread on social media by publishing the photo of the new work:“How trivial and useless it was to think that your fire could kill me.Forged from the ashes of the Vaia Dragon, the new dragon has returned to Lavarone. With his 6 tons of charred wood, 16 meters long and 7 meters high, It is the largest wooden dragon sculpture in the world.Made with the roots of the storm Vaia carries with it the memory of what happened to its predecessor. The pieces of wood are totally charred, deliberately burned by the artist Martalar who, combined with the remains of the fire, recompose the new work. This new Dragon is not only a guardian warning of the relationship between human beings and nature, but it is a memory keeper, of stories, a symbol of rebirth and resilience where we human beings should always remain humble before mother nature."

THE PREVIOUS SCULPTURE

The previous Vaia Dragon was six meters high and seven meters long and was a well-known attraction, both nationally and internationally. Many selfies were taken by visitors with the dragon behind them. The sculpture consisted of 2000 pieces of wood of the storm Vaia and from 3000 screws. The company also participated in the collection of wood for the construction of the work local community:in fact, two classes from the elementary and middle schools of Lavarone were involved. The sculpture is a majestic example of Land Art, works of art that arise in symbiosis with nature and destined, over time, to degrade and then disappear, due to the action of the elements on the deliberately untreated wood.
