ROME - More than a thousand people have died from heat among Hajj pilgrims.The heat and record temperatures are massacring the enormous annual procession of the faithful of Islam towards Mecca, in Saudi Arabia.The latest estimates of the France-Presse agency, there are not 500 (as had been said in recent days) but double the number of deaths due to the extreme heat.

AFP cross-referenced multiple authoritative sources in ten countries to arrive at a real estimate of the tragedy.The overall number, at the moment, is 1,081 people dead.
