ROME - 49.9 degrees centigrade, 121.8 degrees fahrenheit.New Delhi burns. The heat is at record levels for the Indian capital, while the authorities have warned the population of water shortage. The Indian Meteorological Department has reported "severe heat waves", and recorded temperatures at the limit of liveability on Tuesday, in two stations on the outskirts of Delhi, in Narela and Mungeshpur.According to the meteorological office they are nine degrees higher than expected.

Over 30 million people live in Delhi, and the red alert has been triggered. It is not the first time that the heat melts the city at these levels:in May 2022, it reached 49.2° degrees. Many attribute the rise in temperatures to scorching winds coming from the state of Rajasthan, where temperatures on Tuesday were the hottest in the country, at 50.5 degrees. The Phalodi desert region holds the all-time heat record, with 51 degrees in 2016.

At the same time, West Bengal state and the northeastern state of Mizoram were hit by storms and torrential rain from Cyclone Remal, which hit India and Bangladesh on Sunday, killing more than 38 people.
