Get a rope and two empty cans (for example tomato puree or bean cans, although tuna cans are also fine). If you don't have cans or are worried about sharp edges, get two plastic cups, like the ones used in the example.Plastic is easier to use than metal.Styrofoam cups are too spongy and absorb sound rather than transmit it.
The hole must be thin so that the string can pass through.If necessary, get help from an adult to drill holes in the containers.To drill the hole, you can use any sharp object.Remember to make holes with a diameter just large enough to insert the string.
Thread the string through the holes, using a paper clip or other stiff tool to insert the string in the right place.
Once you finish tying, pull the string so that the knots are positioned against the bottom of the containers.If a knot tends to slip through the hole, you can stop it using a toothpick or other blocking device.
Place the open container on your ear, and listen to what your partner tells you while speaking inside the other container. Tighten the string as much as possible.If you've built the phone correctly, you should hear what the other person is telling you, even if the string is long.Then switch and speak so that the other person hears what you say.
