The activists of Latest Generation they return to protest in Florence:today, April 7, there was a new raid inside the Accademia Gallery, where five people entered the room of Michelangelo's David. Two of them chained themselves to the railing that protects the masterpiece. They also displayed a banner which read:«Repair Fund», what they ask to obtain to deal with climate disasters.Another group of four activists instead started the Song of May by De André, while leaflets about the flood in Campi Bisenzio (Florence) were distributed. Before the police intervened, they launched an appeal to those present to participate in the Ultima Generazione initiatives scheduled in Rome on 11 and 25 May.The museum was closed following the commotion. After the two freed themselves, they were all identified by the police at the Uffizi Station.
The Reparation Fund
Specifically, the activists ask the institutions to establish "a preventive, permanent and participatory repair fund to be included annually in the state budget".The money, according to Ultima Generazione, «will have to be obtained through the elimination of environmentally harmful subsidies (Sad), the taxation of extra-profits of fossil fuel companies, the cutting of salaries, bonuses and benefits of their managers, the enormous expenses of politics and of increasingly large military expenditures".«For this reason – they promise – we will continue to take to the streets, to carry out actions of non-violent civil disobedience, taking responsibility for our actions, facing repression, courts and trials».
«Like David and Goliath»
The choice of location for today's action was not random.Emma, a 24-year-old activist, explained that «David was afraid of fighting the giant but he didn't give up.We too can feel this way when faced with all the injustices in the world. We can feel small, just as David must have felt. But we have the intelligence, we have the strength. Our union is our slingshot. We too can defeat the giant, we must be like David."
