Energy production from wind, solar, hydroelectric and biomass reached an all-time record in Portugal in 2023.

The production of renewable energy in Portugal set a historic record during 2023.The clean sources were in fact able to respond to the 61 percent of demand Lusitanian, according to the data indicated by the national electricity network manager Ren.Overall, 31.2 Terawatt hours of energy from renewable sources were produced.

Wind power stands out with 25 percent, hydroelectric at 23 percent

In particular, 25 percent of the energy consumed in the country was produced thanks towind power.A figure slightly higher than that ofhydroelectric, which guaranteed 23 percent. The photovoltaic instead it reached 7 percent:one percentage point more than the biomass.Compared to 2022, the production of hydroelectric energy increased significantly, recording a +70 percent increase. But the data relating to solar photovoltaics, which recorded, was also extremely positive a 43 percent increase, thanks above all to the increase in installed capacity.

This is data that confirms the enormous potential of renewable.Portugal is in fact part of the 50 largest economies in the world and its population exceeds ten million inhabitants. And although the nation objectively enjoys often favorable conditions of solar radiation and wind, such a high figure can only represent an indication for everyone.

Natural gas consumption collapses in Portugal

Also because the consumption of, for example, natural gas, thanks to the growth of renewables, has recorded a decline of 21 percent in 2023.Good news especially because this fossil source is imported by sea essentially from Nigeria and the United States. The overall figure for gas hit its lowest point since 2014.

To complete the Portuguese energy mix there is then 20 percent energy imported and 19 percent energy non-renewable.
