«Report climate crimes».This is the objective of the Greenpeace activists who today, Tuesday 5 December, went into action at Eni's headquarters in Rome.«We are here to denounce the consequences in terms of loss of human life resulting from the use of fossil fuels by nine large European oil & gas companies, including Eni itself», we read in the Note of the NGO.While COP28 is underway in Dubai, some climate activists have opened two banners on the sides of the building in the capital with the words Today's emissions = tomorrow's deaths (Today's emissions, tomorrow's deaths) and projected several messages on the company headquarters, including «Climate justice now» and «Fossil fuels kill».At the same time, other activists brought an 8 meter long installation with the message near the same building ENI's legacy = climate deaths. “The fossil industries bear enormous responsibility for the damage caused to the planet and people by their activities, and the time has come for them to pay for their climate crimes,” they write on their website. The reports of Greenpeace Netherlands released today estimates that «the climate-changing gas emissions in 2022 alone from the nine large European companies in the oil & gas sector (Shell, TotalEnergies, BP, Equinor, ENI, Repsol, OMV, Orlen, and Wintershall Dea) could cause 360 thousand deaths by 2100."The estimated deaths attributable to Eni would instead be equal to 27 thousand. The overall figure – explain the activists – was obtained through a statistical model, accepted by the scientific community, which calculates the deaths that could occur by the end of this century due to the 2022 emissions of the main European oil & gas companies.
