This past month was the warmest September ever recorded on Earth, at least since reliable scientific measurements have existed. This is what the European Union climate observatory Copernicus certified today. And the temperature overtaking the previous transition months between summer and autumn is surprising, the observatory points out.In September 2023 the average surface air temperature was 16.38 degrees:almost 1 degree more than the average for the same month for the years 1991-2020 (+0.93 degrees, to be exact) and half a degree more than the previous record of 2020.Many climate scientists say they are shocked by the margin of temperature increase, reports the BBC.In fact, the same Copernicus report highlights how temperature records are normally broken with much smaller margins, close to a tenth of a degree. But 2023 confirms from this point of view to be a truly radically "different" year.Already last summer it was measured to be the hottest ever in the Northern Hemisphere. Now, that is, in September, the combined provisions of CO2 emissions with the heat wave called El Niño gave it a further push.So the year that is drawing to a close is now "on the way" to officially become the hottest ever in (recorded) world history.«It is simply unbelievable», commented the director of the Copernicus observatory, the Italian Carlo Buontempo:«Climate change is not something that will happen in ten years.Climate change is here."
