Some activists of the group Extinction Rebellion they climbed the Grandi Stazioni palace, headquarters of the Region, this morning in Venice and chained themselves to a balcony, while others carried a giant papier-mâché reproduction of the famous Trojan Horse. The action of civil disobedience, between the epic and the current, is a challenge to the drought plan, judged useless by activists, of the president of Veneto Luca Zaia:«A dangerous weapon presented to citizens as a gift.A decree that does not recognize the climate crisis as the cause of the drought and extreme weather events we are experiencing not only does not address the problem but aggravates it", declare the protesters.According to activists, the Region would treat the effects of the climate crisis «as if they were isolated events and in a non-resolute way.In the meantime, it offers short-term solutions to mitigate only the immediate damage. The Government, both national and regional, continues to downplay the seriousness of the ecoclimatic crisis and instead allude to a phantom catastrophism on the part of environmentalists."
This is why this morning the group staged an epic protest-re-enactment that compares the Region's plan to the Trojan Horse told in the Homeric Iliad:a weapon presented as a gift. The two protesters on the balcony announced to passers-by observing the scene from below:«Like Cassandra in the myth of the destruction of Troy, science is ignored.Like the seer Laocoön, we warn citizens."The prophetess, with the gift of foresight, had warned her fellow citizens of the presence of the Achaean soldiers inside the horse, but had remained unheeded.Only Laocoön believed her and for this reason he was killed by the gods and devoured by two snakes.Likewise, activists portray themselves as prophets announcing the misfortunes that await us if serious action is not taken against climate change. In front of the Grandi Stazioni building, other members of the group dressed as soldiers displayed signs with some writings:«Ignoring the science», «Failing to address the climate crisis», «Short-term solutions».
