The civil suit was filed in San Francisco

The state of California takes five of the world's largest oil companies to trial.Claiming that companies have caused billions of dollars in damage to the environment. And they lied about the risks of fossil fuels. The civil suit was filed in San Francisco against Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP, ConocoPhillips and Chevron. But the American Petroleum Institute was also named in the lawsuit. The companies and their allies allegedly “intentionally downplayed the risks posed by fossil fuels to the public, while understanding that their products could lead to significant global warming.”The lie would have been perpetrated as early as the 1950s.Seven other states and dozens of municipalities have filed similar lawsuits in recent years. But California's lawsuit immediately becomes one of the most significant legal challenges facing the fossil fuel industry.California is calling for the creation of a fund to pay for future damages caused by climate disasters in the state.
