Both bears are fine and still together

ROME – The confirmation is given by the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise: Amarena's puppies they emerged from the winter unscathed. They did it, despite the death of their mother.

For now”the two bears are fine and, above all, they are still together“, announces the National Park with a post on social media.“In about a month they could separate, as happens with other young bears who are evicted in spring by their mothers, or stay together just long enough to still give each other support and postpone the separation until they are even older..In a short time, therefore, it will not be easy to identify them, they will not be different from all the other bears of the same age who have separated from their mothers. It will be possible to be sure of their identity only through genetics."

THE AMARENA PUPPIES ARE TWO MALE BROTHERS

Thanks to the genetic analyzes carried out by Ispra on the samples collected in autumn, it was also possible to establish that the two bears, sons of Amarena, they are in fact two males.

“Today we are happy with the choice of leaving them free in Nature - they explain -, a choice that is not at all easy or obvious, but the only appropriate one to give them the possibility of being two wild Marsican bears, both alive at the end of the first winter, even without their mother."

THE APPEAL TO RESPECT BEARS

What will be the fate of these two bears?“At the moment this is impossible to say. We can be sure that they know how to orient themselves, that they don't need food and only need respect from humans as has been done up to now, without ever forgetting that they are just two specimens of a population of around 60 bears who are doing their best to survive. Let's not forget that each of us must also do our part by increasing knowledge and awareness towards a possible, concrete and above all respectful coexistence", concludes the message from the National Park.
