ROME – Today, Saturday 23 March Earth Hour returns at 8.30pm, Earth Hour:the WWF global event that since 2007 has united people all over the world by inviting them to turn off the lights for an hour with the desire to show, through this symbolic gesture, how strong the impact of shared action for the protection of of the climate and to save the planet.Earth Hour is not just an international event, but the request to join forces to take '+Action and -CO2' and therefore ensure a future of well-being.
It is precisely with the message “+Action -Co2:Let's give a future to our future!” that WWF Italy invites citizens, communities and companies to turn off the lights and treat themselves to an hour for the Earth, in the wake of the challenge launched earlier this week, dedicating 60 minutes to positive action for the future of our fragile Planet . Today the main monuments of Italy and 170 municipalities will be turned off for an hour will participate in this initiative.Earth Hour 2024 has received the patronage of:Senate of the Republic and Chamber of Deputies, of the ANCI, of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security. The President of the Republic Medal was also awarded at the event.
THE BIGGEST HOUR FOR EARTH
Millions of people in over 190 countries and territories will bring 'The Biggest Hour for Earth' to life, the greatest hour for the Earth, with the aim of transforming this single hour into millions of hours of actions and moments of awareness on the risks linked to the loss of Nature and the impacts of climate change.Last edition, over 410,000 hours were dedicated to caring for the planet by millions of volunteers. At the same time, this year's Earth Hour will also serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of our Planet, the need to protect it and how little time we have to do so, for a more just and sustainable future for all.Earth Hour 2024, in fact, arrives in the wake of the result of the COP28 in Dubai, in which it was agreed to "transit away from fossil fuels":in short, the path to the complete elimination of fossil fuels has begun. There are just 6 years left to reach the objective that COP28 itself has set itself, that is, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 43% compared to 1990 levels. This and the next few years will therefore be crucial to ensure that the decade ends positively for the climate, for nature and for people, avoiding enormous risks for our planet and everyone's lives. We are all called to make a contribution, small but precious, to avoid incalculable risk situations for ourselves and future generations.
The central Italian event will take place on Saturday 23 March in Rome, at 8.30 pm at the Colosseum.Furthermore, there are many initiatives organized in the area by WWF volunteers with over 40 local activities and around 200 municipalities that have joined the initiative and which will extinguish symbolic places, squares and monuments throughout Italy. As many as 12 provincial capitals will shut down their monuments. You can find the closest one through the map made available by the WWF on the event web page.
