BOLOGNA – A new garden dedicated to biodiversity and named after the entomologist Giorgio Celli is born in San Lazzaro di Savena, on the outskirts of Bologna.Present at the ribbon cutting were, among others, the mayor Isabella Conti and the son of the scientist and popularizer, Davide Celli. It's about ua green area of approximately 3,000 square meters, between via Emilia and via Martiri delle Foibe, the result of the recovery of a degraded area financed with 115,000 euros obtained from the compensation for the extraction activities of the Molino di Russo quarry. The garden is crossed by a cycle/pedestrian path and divided into five thematic areas dedicated to five different habitats typical of the Bolognese hills:the hygrophilous forest;the chalk garden;an area with tall trees;an orchard area;a vineyard. There is also a large flowerbed, whose seedlings will mark the annual flowering calendar.Overall they were planted 500 shrubs, 54 trees and 40 vine plants.
The Biodiversity Garden, in the center of San Lazzaro, "is an important result for multiple reasons - explains the municipal councilor for the environment, Beatrice Grasselli - from the improvement of the quality and liveability of the urban area, to the counteracting the effects of heat islands, up to the promotion of nature's role in generating beauty and well-being.In the new garden it will be possible to admire an annual calendar of native blooms, recognize the typical elements of the local landscape, such as the chalks, and their vegetation and also observe the presence of small fauna and pollinators throughout the year which will have the possibility of finding an important habitat in the new garden".It is precisely "in respect of these values", adds the councilor, that the Municipality of San Lazzaro has "considered it important the choice to name the area after the Bolognese entomologist Giorgio Celli and has made the commitment to name the green area near Edo Ansaloni, for all the important things he has done for his city".
