- In recent days, key Democratic Party donors, lawmakers and voters have lined up against Biden.
- The president appears less and less lucid and the polls show him in sharp decline. He says he wants to continue the race for US elections.
- Among the possible replacements is Vice President Kamala Harris, but also several governors of states led by Democrats.
The last of Joe Biden was to present the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, like Vladimir Putin. It happened over the course of NATO summit and, although in the subsequent press conference the US president appeared more lucid than his latest outings, the pressure for him to step aside for the good of the Democratic Party has come back to be strong.
Biden's health conditions and lucidity have been talked about for some time, but after the disaster of presidential debate at the end of June the situation appeared more critical. The number of reputed party members, financiers and voters of Democrats calling for a change of candidate is growing, but Biden continues to reiterate that he is the right person to defeat Donald Trump. In the meantime, however, the toto-names on who could replace him.
The pressure on Joe Biden
The gaffes and blunders of the president of the United States and candidate for re-election, Joe Biden, can no longer be counted.Only on July 11th as part of the NATO summit he called “Putin” the Ukrainian president Zelensky and confused Vice President Kamala Harris with Donald Trump. In reality, things went relatively well in the evening press conference, but Biden is now in a position to not be able to afford any mistakes, given what happened at the end of June in electoral debate with Trump.
On that occasion the voice reduced to a rattle, the rhythm of speaking extremely slow and the uncertainty increasingly pronounced have reignited the controversy on a topic that has been talked about for a long time, namely that today's 81-year-old Biden is no longer the same as he once was and that he no longer has energy and clarity to face a new presidential mandate. After the television debate, many called for his withdrawal from the electoral race and his replacement with another leading exponent of the Democratic Party. On the day after on New York Times, the most important newspaper in the United States, were even there four editorials with this line of thinking.
And day after day the positions taken for the increase Biden's withdrawal, also given the accumulation of gaffes by the president. Some financiers of the Democratic Party have threatened to withdraw their money if there is no change of candidate and even some parliamentarians have officially broken their silence, such as he did the senator Michael Bennett, or even governors, as Maura Healey of Massachusetts. Also figures of reference for the democratic electorate, such as the actor George Clooney, they made themselves heard.Clooney has never hidden his support for the party, has long participated as a protagonist in fundraising evenings and also has a good relationship with Biden. In an editorial on New York Times however he wrote that the moment has come for the president to step aside. And the former president Barack Obama, after the initial support, he started to raise doubts.
No about-face, for now
Biden has so far always rejected the sender's request to withdraw from the re-election race. The president has been repeating for days that he is the only person capable of beating Donald Trump and he also wrote a letter, where among other things he underlines that he won the primaries of the Democratic Party and that therefore the party's electorate is on its side.In an interview with the network Msnbc he took it out on me snipers of his party, challenging anyone who wanted to run for office and try to beat him.
On 11 July, during the NATO summit, Biden he repeated of having to finish the job and be “the most qualified person to run for president."And since the only one who can decide on Biden's withdrawal is Biden himself, it seems that things will remain this way and perhaps Biden it's taking its time precisely to make his retirement no longer possible. The fact that polls show his popularity is constantly decreasing and that the 67 percent of the electorate ask his withdrawal leaves the chapter still open, also because the Democratic Party advisors are trying to make him understand that the situation is anything but rosy.Biden's withdrawal is therefore still within the realm of possibility.
Biden's possible replacements
In recent years New York Times he said that, according to some sources within the Democratic Party, they are underway voter polls to understand whether a possible replacement for Biden could have a chance of winning against Trump.
In case the president decides to retire, less than four months before the elections, they are there some names that are circulating to replace it.The strongest is that of the vice president Kamala Harris, who would be Biden's natural replacement and who would avoid internal clashes within the party. His approval rating is not very high in the country, but in recent months his popularity in the progressive world has grown due to battles on abortion, on minority rights and for attacks on Donald Trump.Another name that is mentioned is that of the governor of California, Gavin Newsom. He has said in the past that he is considering a run for presidential elections in 2028, today however he is among the party figures who defend Joe Biden and reiterate that he is the candidate.Precisely this closeness, however, could make him an ideal candidate in the event of retirement.
A third name is that of the governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer. His profile is very progressive and in the American state he comes from two mandates that have made his soar popularity, to the point that she is defined as the rising star of the Democratic Party.Other names that are mentioned are those of the governor J.B.Pritzker of Illinois, a multibillionaire with a certain network inside and outside the party and who would know how to gather supporters as well as a lot of funds, the governor of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro, who could thus become the first Jewish president, and Andy Beshear of Kentucky, considered one of the most popular governors in the United States and capable of real exploits in the past against the Republicans.Another name that is mentioned is that of Pete Buttigieg, secretary of Transportation and among Biden's challengers in the party primaries in 2020.The names of Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton, relaunched here and there especially by the Italian press, have never been taken into consideration by the Democratic Party.
