The green color of the sea water at the sampling sites appears to be attributable to this bloom

It's the fault of the heat if the sea in Naples has taken on a strange one green color. The laboratory analyses, carried out by Arpa Campania following the samples taken yesterday in the waters of the Gulf of Naples, confirmed the presence of a phytoplankton bloom or a non-toxic microalgae belonging to the phylum Chlorophyta, class Prasinophyceae. The green color of the sea water at the sampling sites appears to be attributable to this bloom. The inspections will continue - a note explains - even today in addition to the marine-coastal monitoring activities already scheduled.

Algae, heat and little hydrodynamics

The data directly collected at sea available so far highlight particularly high values uniformly throughout the entire investigated area regarding the water temperature (above 28 degrees) and the presence of chlorophyll (with concentrations of several milligrams per cubic metre) in the first layers surface of marine waters. In short, it is a perfect combination of the presence of this algae and the intensity of solar radiation, the effect of the high pressure regime of African origin which hinders the normal hydrodynamism and exchange of the waters of the Gulf, preventing their mixing.Furthermore, the maps developed by the Copernicus services of the European Union confirm the anomalous presence of chlorophyll in the Gulf of Naples with a marked increase precisely on the days in which the phenomenon was detected, between Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July.
