The ambassadors of the 27 countries of the European Union, after weeks of stalemate, have found an agreement to include nuclear energy among the renewable energy sources, according to the Financial Times.A decision that would allow member countries to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, one of the pillars of the Union's long-term energy and environmental policy.A victory for France, which overcame the opposition of Germany, Austria and Luxembourg during the negotiations. The text on which the agreement was reached, under the rotating presidency of the Council expressed by Sweden, provides that "other sources of energy without fossil fuels contribute to achieving climate neutrality by 2050".A mediation that effectively recognizes hydrogen produced by nuclear energy among the renewable energy sources included in the relevant community directive.
The agreement
The renewables directive, the one at the center of the stalemate which now seems destined to be overcome, is one of the most important dossiers of Fit for 55, the package of EU climate reforms and regulations, which aims to reduce emissions and climate neutrality .The agreement is «a historic legislative pact in which the EU undertakes to reduce its emissions by 55% by 2030», declared the Swedish Energy Minister, Ebba Busch, «nuclear energy will be considered as sustainable source".
