Argentinian Celeste Saulo will be head of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).Saulo, 59 years old, number one of the Argentine WMO since 2014, former vice-president, will become general secretary from 1 January 2024, replacing his Finnish colleague Petteri Taalas.TO communicate it it is the institution itself on its website.«In these times when inequality and climate change are the greatest global threats, WMO must help strengthen Meteorological and Hydrological Services to protect populations and their economies, providing timely and effective services and early warning systems» , Saulo said.«My ambition – added the future secretary – is to guide the WMO towards a scenario in which the voice of all members is heard equally, giving priority to the most vulnerable ones and in which the actions it takes are aligned with the needs and particularities of each of them".The World Meteorological Organization, born from the International Meteorological Organization, founded in 1873, became the United Nations agency for everything related to meterology, hydrology and geophysics in 1951.It is based in Switzerland, in Geneva.It leads the national meteorological and hydrological services of the member countries and follows prevention and research both on climate change (including related problems) and on water resources, transport and even food security.Supporting Saulo's action will be Abdulla Al Mandous, director general of the National Meteorology Centre, permanent representative of the United Arab Emirates.She will have the role of President while Saulo was elected at the top as General Secretary after receiving the necessary two-thirds majority of votes from the delegates to the Congress (approximately 193 members in total).
