No to cigarette butts in the sea (which can kill fish and turtles), Sorrento gives away cigarette cases

The Municipality of Sorrento is giving away cigarette cases which have been distributed free of charge in the beach establishments:the idea is against the bad habit of leaving cigarette butts on beaches and in the environment

NAPLES – The awareness campaign is underway against the abandonment of cigarette butts in the environment.The initiative, promoted by the municipal administration, concerned the distribution of butt holders of cigarettes at the Bagni della Regina Giovanna, in Capo di Sorrento (Naples).Included in the activities linked to the Blue Flag, the activities will continue until the end of September, to counteract the abandonment of this particular waste, which ends up in the sea with the danger of being ingested by birds, fish or turtles, even causing his death.Not to mention that the degradation times of a butt vary from 5 to 12 years.

“The distribution of butt holders has been repeated constantly for years now to try to raise awareness, both among our citizens and tourists, on the importance of carrying out small, great virtuous attitudes – declares the president of the city council, Luigi Di Prisco – It may seem trivial, but a wrong gesture such as abandoning a single cigarette butt, repeated many times in a day, if not counteracted becomes a real problem.Greater emphasis was given to Regina Giovanna, which is a symbolic place of our city, but this initiative will be replicated at other public beaches in the months of August and September".
