ROME – This morning three activists from Animal Rebellion they chose two statues from the Capitoline Museums as vehicles of their message through nonviolent direct action.
An activist stripped naked in front of the statue of the Capitoline Wolf, while two others, after throwing on the statue of Marcus Aurelius on horseback fake purple cobwebs, they stuck to the floor in front of it.The slogans on the t-shirts: 'Enough animals in circuses' and 'Future Plant Animal Rebellion'.
The action, the association says in a note, is part of the Kimba Campaign, which began on February 1st with an action of disobedience in Piazza del Popolo, in the heart of the capital. The Civil Disobedience Campaign was born and inspired by Rebellion of Kimba, the lion who escaped from the circus that held him prisoner last November 11th in Ladispoli. Forced to perform almost every day and then return to a cramped cage, Kimba chooses to escape from the regime of agony and exploitation to which he is subjected.“Kimba's escape is therefore an act of Rebellion, Resistance and self-determination from which, as human beings, we have everything to learn- we read again in the activists' note - Through the direct nonviolent actions of the Campaign, the Animal Rebellion movement wants to achieve the abolition of the use of non-human animals in circuses and their liberation".

As a nonviolent civil resistance movement, Ribellione Animale asks the Italian Government to put an end to the exploitation of animals in circuses throughout the national territory, immediately issuing a legislative decree that implements paragraph 1 of article 2 of law n.106/2022.“Law no. 106 of 2022 has already been approved by Parliament and is therefore in force, however the Government is not making it effective, but rather continues to finance these abuses– they write – Ribellione Animale also requests that all animals currently forced to perform in Italian circuses be freed and reinserted into their natural habitat where possible, or that they be transferred to sanctuaries for exotic animals, with spaces compliant with their ethology and capable of providing to their needs. The situation in Italian circuses is abominable, the animals are forced to adopt behaviors never seen in nature, suffering mistreatment that is harmful to the well-being of any living being and degrading to their dignity. The animal exploitation that takes place in circuses is violent and oppressive. These practices have no educational or cultural value, but only follow the speciesist logic of domination and exploitation.Every year, Italian circuses receive full support from the Ministry of Culture which finances their activities through the National Fund for Live Entertainment. On May 23, 2023, Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano wrote a check for 8.6 million euros in favor of circus activities, including those that exploit non-human animals".
In Italy there are currently 54 circuses with non-human animals on tour, for a total of 2000 exotic animals involved. However, there are already more than 50 countries in the world that have banned the use of animals in circuses in various forms; In Europe alone, animal exploitation by circus structures is banned in 17 countries.Maria Sofia, Animal Rebellion activist, declares:“These statues also testify to animal exploitation. It is absurd to be indignant because we protest without ruining them, and at the same time not to be angry at the cruelty that non-human animals are forced to suffer in circuses and farms. We take issue with monuments not to damage them, but to show how the anthropocentric celebration inscribed in them is still accepted in the present:now as in the past it is considered normal to use non-human individuals for the interests of our species, making them entertainment products and killing them for violent, unjust and unsustainable food consumption.Animal husbandry is among the main causes of the ecoclimatic crisis; If we continue like this we won't even have a future on our planet. We ask the government to stop public subsidies for livestock farming, and to implement the already existing law n.106 of 2022 which makes animal circuses illegal, so as to eliminate violence that should remain dusty and full of cobwebs in history".
