"There is no danger to humans. And, indeed, the wolf helps keep the number of wild boars under control":said the new commander of the Liguria Forestry Carabinieri, Carlo Chiavacci

GENOA – No wolf psychosis:it's true that in Liguria the presence is increasing, but this is good for the environment and does not create dangers for humans. This is the message launched by Colonel Carlo Chiavacci, new regional commander of the Forestry Carabinieri, on the sidelines of a press conference to take stock of the activity carried out during 2023.“The presence of wolves in the Ligurian territory is increasing - he confirms - this is a good sign from an environmental point of view and for the protection of biodiversity. The wolf, for example, helps to keep the presence of wild boars under control, which is very significant in Liguria and often causes critical issues and problems in agricultural areas.Furthermore, the wolf poses no danger to humans“.

In the field of protection of fauna and flora, during 2023 the Carabinieri carried out 3,665 checks in Liguria, detecting 124 crimes which led to 69 people being reported, 63 seizures and 385 administrative violations contested for over 220,000 euros.More in detail, 131 checks were carried out for mistreatment, 1,318 anti-poaching and wildlife protection interventions, 12 missions to combat the proliferation of invasive and non-native species.Fortunately, adds Chiavacci, "citizens' sensitivity to animal welfare has greatly increased".However, last year 38 criminal and 46 administrative violations were found, with around 400 checks to combat trade in endangered animal and plant species and irregularly harvested timber which can contribute to the worsening of climate change. In the latter areas, 19 ordinances and injunctions from the administrative authority and five definitive confiscations were also issued, for an economic value of 35,000 euros.
