THE SUMATRA TIGER AND THE DANGER OF EXTINGUISHING

The Sumatran Tiger is at risk of extinction mainly due to habitat destruction;the IUCN Red List (World Union for Conservation of Nature) estimates that there are 400 to 600 adult individuals left in the wild.The threats to these cats range from agriculture, to deforestation for the demand for timber and mining, to diseases such as distemper or African swine fever, which affect their prey.And then they are at risk due to poaching - both for the illegal trade in tiger parts and for the killing of prey - and the incursions of tigers into agricultural land.For these reasons iThe Bioparco di Roma supports the WildCats Conservation Alliance with a fundraiser as part of a project in the Kerinci Seblat National Park on the island of Sumatra.
