Eni Spa and two managers of the Pomezia company are held responsible by the Carabinieri of the Ecological Operations Unit of Rome for the crime of environmental pollution.The investigations, directed by the Public Prosecutor of Velletri Giancarlo Amato and the Deputy Prosecutor Ambrogio Cassiani, continued for a year and a half:now the notice of conclusion from the investigators with the verification, from 2019 to today, of a progressive leakage of fuel from some tanks in the depot owned by Eni Spa located in Santa Palomba di Pomezia (Rome).According to the investigations, the event caused significant pollution of the surrounding land, affecting the three levels of the aquifer "in an irreversible manner".The notification of the conclusion of the investigations, also conducted through technical investigations, also highlights how the company, «through negligence and imprudence», over time, «to obtain savings on costs due to the adaptation of safety criteria and maintenance", allegedly failed to install double bottoms in some tanks containing jet fuel and petrol.Thus failing to "waterproof with cement" the containment basins around the tanks, "which are instead made up of permeable soil and thus favoring the spill".The Ecological Operations Unit of Rome also accused the company of administrative responsibility for an organizational model that "did not include specific protocols" on the prevention of fuel leakage from tanks that could prevent environmental crimes.
