On the afternoon of September 17, thousands of pagers exploded in Lebanon, causing 12 deaths and nearly 3,000 injuries.Israel is behind the attack.

  • The explosion was caused by the explosive charge inserted into a batch of Hezbollah-issued pagers.
  • Around 500 Hezbollah members, as well as the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, lost their sight.
  • 12 dead and almost 3 thousand injured. For the Lebanese prime minister it is a violation of national sovereignty.

Now 24 hours afterterrorist attack with which Israel blew up thousands of pager of Hezbollah in Lebanon, the toll is 12 dead and almost 3 thousand injured. The explosions occurred on the afternoon of September 17 and were apparently caused by small charges explosive positioned next to the batteries.

Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack but sources cited by the New York Times and other major international media have confirmed the Israeli origin.Hezbollah has spoken of a violation of the country's sovereignty and it cannot be ruled out that there will be reprisals.

The explosion of pagers

The explosions occurred from 3.30pm onwards on 17 September.Small explosions almost simultaneously in different points of Lebanon, generated by pagers supplied to members of the political-military organization Hezbollah.

According to initial reconstructions, around 20-30 grams of explosive charge had been placed in the pagers, activated by receiving a message.Videos circulating on social media have shown gruesome scenes:explosions in shops, supermarkets and on the streets, with people covered in blood and ambulance traffic congested.

The provisional toll is 12 deaths, including a little girl. There are almost 3 thousand injured and at least 500 Hezbollah members have lost their sight, as well as the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani. There have also been explosions in Syria, where Hezbollah militiamen are fighting alongside the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Violation of Lebanese sovereignty

TO February Hezbollah members had abandoned the use of mobile phones for fear of being monitored by Israeli intelligence, moving on to pager.Thousands of devices have been ordered from the company Gold Apollo of Taiwan, which have been tampered with during production or during transportation to Lebanon. The president of the company, Hsu Ching Kuang, said that those pagers were not produced in their factory, but by another company that uses its brand but about which it was not possible to have further information at the moment.

There were no claims for the attack, but authoritative sources did listen from the New York Times and the main international media have confirmed the Israeli origin.Najib Mikati, Israeli prime minister, called the attack "a violation of Lebanese sovereignty".

Israel and Hezbollah have been clashing since October 7, when Israel began its military offensive in Gaza Strip which has so far caused over 40 thousand deaths. In recent months, Israel has carried out several attacks against Lebanon, even killing leaders of Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, in the capital Beirut.Israeli fire from October 7th to today has killed at least 500 Lebanese, while Hezbollah has launched missiles into Israeli soil on numerous occasions. At the end of August between the two parties there was the heaviest fire exchange since 2006, with Israel launching around 100 missiles and Hezbollah launching over 300 rockets and drones. The terrorist attack of September 17 on Lebanese soil constitutes a new frontier in the clash between the two actors.
