GENOA - Rescued and transferred to the Genoa Aquarium by the pilots of the port of Voltri-Pra' a 32 kilo loggerhead turtle was trapped in a ghost net and injured in the neck. The rescue took place on December 2nd. The turtle also lacks its right front fin, probably amputated in a collision with the propeller of a boat or torn by the same net in which it was entangled together with plastic waste.
The medical-scientific staff of the Genoa Aquarium took care of the animal and found an ongoing infection. At the moment, the turtle, named Silva in homage to the "pilot" Riccardo Da Silva who rescued him, it is housed in one of the curatorial tanks not visible to the public dedicated to rescue activities.
The Genoa Aquarium has been intervening on sea turtles in difficulty since 1994 and since 2009 he has been the institutional contact for the Liguria Region for the recovery of caretta caretta. In 2017 it received, together with the Livorno Aquarium, also managed by Costa Edutainment, national recognition as a sea turtle recovery and long-term care center from the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
