Cop28, Picket:“Food security and climate change are closely linked”

“There is no way to achieve the results envisaged by the Paris Agreements without urgently addressing the interactions between food systems, agriculture and climate,” says Minister Pichetto Fratin

ROME – “Food security and climate change are closely linked.Together with our partners, we are carrying forward the reflection, with concrete initiatives aimed at strengthen our food systems and make them more sustainable, resilient and productive”.This was said by the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, in his speech at the event on food and climate underway at COP28, organized by Italy and the United Arab Emirates.

“On 1 December here in Dubai – he added – the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, announced that Italy signed the United Arab Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action of COP28.We are very satisfied with the great support it is receiving from the international community.We have supported the logic and direction of this Declaration and know that there is no way to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals or fully realize the promises of the Paris Agreement without urgently addressing the interactions between food systems, agriculture and climate.For the same reasons, the next Italian Presidency of the G7, in 2024, will continue to promote an integrated and ambitious agenda on climate and food systems, keeping the focus on global food security high on the international political agenda.To this end, we will build on the results of COP28 and the United Nations Food Systems Summit +2 hosted and co-organized by Italy last July.
To confirm the concrete commitment to these objectives, Italy is also one of the founding members of the "Collaboration for Technical Cooperation to support the implementation of the United Arab Emirates Declaration of CoP28", he concluded.
