Friday 17 November, according to Copernicus scientists, was the first day that global temperatures were more than 2 degrees higher than 1850-1900 (or pre-industrial) levels.

ROME – Last Friday 17 the global average temperature of the Earth exceeded 2 degrees of increase above pre-industrial levels for the first time. It is worth remembering that at COP21 in Paris in 2015, the historic Agreement was decided on the objective of limiting well below 2 degrees.

The announcement of the record on Friday 17th is on X Samatha Burgess, deputy director of Copernicus, the European Union's satellite and land and sea observation service.

“The provisional global temperature in the ERA5 dataset for November 17 detected by Copernicus was 1.17 degrees higher than the period 1991-2020, the hottest ever recorded“, writes Burgess.“Our estimate is that it was the first day that global temperatures were more than 2 degrees above 1850-1900 (or pre-industrial) levels, coming in at 2.06 degrees,” he adds.
