Paolo Papa, delegate of AMI Napoli:"It is important to participate locally and empower young people"

NAPLES – “On September 21st when we inaugurated the Neapolitan delegation of Ambiente Mare Italia we announced that we would adopt this little beach which, unfortunately, has been abandoned for a very long time.Today together with various people and scout groups let's clean up as much as possible, at least for all the small objects abandoned on the beach by citizens".He explains it to Dire Paul Pope, delegate of I LOVE Naples, busy leading the cleaning operations of the Neapolitan beach of Bagnoli this morning, near the Belvedere roundabout.

On this day of civic commitment and environmental intervention organized by the delegation of Ambiente Mare Italia from Naples, there are over 50 volunteers involved who, assisted by the Ambassadors of the Sea, AMI experts trained within the project “Ambassadors of the Sea, citizen scientists at work” supported with eight per thousand funds from the Waldensian Church, cleaned up the beach by removing two quintals of waste, including plastic, cigarette butts, glass, cotton buds, purifier filters.
“Ambiente Mare Italia – continues Papa – believes it is important to participate in the area and ensure that young people take responsibility and can spread this word.It is both a form of education and a civic commitment that we try to give to our citizens, always in the hope that the Municipality and institutions will welcome this appeal from citizens who want to regain possession of their sea".

The beach subject to intervention is located on the border with the Municipality of Pozzuoli and is a stretch of state-owned coastline where swimming is prohibited. The objective of the Naples delegation is to monitor this stretch of the coast with cleaning and environmental intervention actions and to return it cleaner and safer to the citizens. Before starting the cleaning, the volunteers - including many very young people - participated in a scientific dissemination event edited by Erika Fabbrizzi, expert marine ecologist and researcher at Federico II University.“It is a wonderful way – says Fabbrizzi – of bringing young people and citizens closer to an initiative that allows them to understand the problems linked to sea pollution, but also allows them to do something to move towards the restoration of coasts and marine environments".
