CAGLIARI – A “loot” of approx 125 kilos of sand, pebbles and shells, taken from the Sardinian beaches by unwary tourists. It is the budget of the checks carried out this summer from the Cagliari air and maritime border police office at Elmas airport, in 61 separate interventions.
“Despite the information and awareness campaign aimed at tourists through the dissemination of posters and information brochures in the beach concessions - it is specified - and the preparation of appropriate signs which provide for the ban at national and international arrivals at Cagliari-Elmas airport, there has been, compared to previous years, a strong increase of the sanctioning activity implemented by the Border Police office".
In the vast majority of cases, the Police says, it is those who are caught in the act foreign tourists, who try to leave taking with them the natural souvenirs of Sardinia, in memory of their holiday on the island.
A FOREIGN FOUND WITH 32 BAGS SANDED
Three examples above all are reported by the border office of what is a real raid:in the same check a foreign citizen was stopped while carrying his luggage 32 bags containing sand taken from the most famous beaches of the province, including Porto Pino, Piscinas, Su Giudeu, Fontanamre, Su Portu, Cala Domestica, Porto Cauli, Buggerru, Masua, Nora, Santa Margherita, Su Guventeddu, Campana beach, Poetto, Portixeddu, Is Figus , Teulada.
THE MOST FREQUENT EXCUSE:"I KNEW IT"
A second tourist was stopped with 12 plastic bottles, with sand inside taken from other beaches on the island, including La Maddalena, Poetto, Platamona, Porto Torres, Tuerredda, Cala Goloritzè, Costa Verde and from the Dorgali coast, detailed and scrupulously cataloged by the same containers. He had a third with him 16 and a half kilos of sand taken from an unspecified beach in the municipality of Villasimius.Almost all of the passengers "when contesting the administrative fine - the Police said - and the consequent seizure, declared that they ignored the relevant environmental legislation".
