BOLOGNA – “It is rooted in me the belief, and not from today, that every single euro entrusted to the Italian Alpine Club is brought to value in the best way thanks to the tireless work of our volunteers", word of the President General of the Cai, Antonio Montani. For the first time the Italian Alpine Club has drawn up its Social budget, thanks to the stimulus of the Central Steering Committee which strongly believes in a transparent reporting model, aimed at all stakeholders through an open and constructive dialogue. The principle on which the logic of the document is based, referring to the year 2022 and available on cai.it, is that of the”Accountabilityy", or "the duty to explain, justify to those who are entitled, what is being done to respect the commitments made”.Among the strategic objectives of the Cai included in the 2022 Social Budget, there are the cultural mediation between mountain populations and city populations, the approach of young people to the mountains, the approach to sustainability and training in self-responsibility.
"It is rooted in me the belief, and not from today, that every single euro entrusted to the Italian Alpine Club is brought to value in the best way thanks to the tireless work of our volunteers - writes in the introduction the general president, Antonio Montani-. The need to make this awareness perceived by the whole social body and outside it, convinced me to draw up, for the first time in the history of the Association, the social budget, a document that communicates in depth the value and scope of our business far beyond the purely financial and accounting aspects”.
The document is structured in three parts: the identity of the entity (with the explanation of the institutional structure, the mission, the ethical values of reference and the strategic design), the economic statement (with the economically sustainable effect that the activity of the entity has produced on the main categories of stakeholders) and the social relationship (with the results obtained in relation to commitments, programs and effects on individual stakeholders). The last pages of the Social Report give space to the improvement objectives that the association has set for the near future.
“In this first phase the social budget will affect all the activities carried out and directed by the central Cai. The medium term objective however is to prepare a consolidated social budget, that also involves all the territorial bodies, starting from the regional groups and sections”, concludes Montani in the introduction. And he explains how the " consequence of this operation will finally bring to light the enormous work that our thousands of volunteers, tenaciously and passionately, produce daily. The awareness of this added value must make us proud, we all members of the Italian Alpine Club, when we interface with public institutions and private bodies, proposing them to collaborate in the many ways in which we think it is right to make the mountain known and improve its attendance”.
An example that shows how the Cai is a multiplier of economic resources thanks to the commitment of its 12 thousand volunteers, there is the call for the Sections, worth 300 thousand euros, with which the Headquarters financed last year the maintenance of the trails throughout the national territory. With these resources, about 84 thousand kilometers of trail network have been arranged. In this case, the value generated by the Cai emerges both in the arrangement of a common good, usable by anyone, and in the exponential value, generated by the activity of volunteers.
If the cost of maintaining the trails (including materials, equipment, time spent by volunteers, gasoline, etc.) is estimated at 150 euros per kilometer, the value generated by the Cai is about 13 million euros. The reference model followed for the preparation of the Social Budget is the Gbs standard (National Study Group on Social Budget), realized in collaboration with the University "Link campus University of Rome.
