The latest study from the Ramazzini institute reveals that herbicides containing glyphosate can cause leukemia even in very low doses:the tests were performed on rats

BOLOGNA – Glyphosate-based herbicides can cause leukemia at a young age.Even with reduced doses. It is the first outcome, found in rats, of the international toxicological study conducted by the Ramazzini Institute of Bologna, the results of which were presented two days ago in the Emilian capital on the occasion of the international scientific conference on 'Environment, work and health'.The long-term study focused on both glyphosate alone and two commercial formulations used in Europe and the United States. The substances were administered to rats through drinking water starting from prenatal life with daily doses now considered safe and acceptable for humans (from 0.5 to 50 milligrams per kilo of body weight per day).

HALF OF THE DEATHS WITHIN ONE YEAR OF LIFE

As Daniele Mandrioli, director of the Ramazzini research center and coordinator of the study on glyphosate, explains, “about half of leukemia deaths observed in mice exposed to glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides occurred less than one year of age.In contrast, no cases of leukemia were observed under one year of age in more than 1,600 rats studied by the United States National Toxicology Program and the Ramazzini Institute."

IT IS THE MOST COMPLETE STUDY DONE SO FAR ON GLPHOSATE

The one conducted by the Bolognese research body is still up to date the “most comprehensive toxicological study ever conducted on glyphosate and provides vital data for regulators, decision-makers and the general public.”The preliminary results on glyphosate have been anticipated and made known now by the Ramazzini Institute because "they are so important for public health", explains Mandrioli. Full data will be made available in the coming weeks, while the publication of several 'peer review' articles on the study is expected at the beginning of 2024.Ramazzini's research therefore shows "the impact of glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides on carcinogenicity, the neurotoxicity, multigenerational effects, organ toxicity, endocrine disruption and prenatal developmental toxicity”.In previous studies, Ramazzini recalls, also presented to the EU Parliament, they had been shown negative effects of glyphosate on the human organism (in particular on the intestinal microbiome and during pregnancy) even at doses currently considered safe by European legislation.

EUROPE READY YET YET EXTENSION OK TO GLPHOSATE

Brussels itself is moving towards a further one extension of the green light for the use of glyphosate as a herbicide, albeit with some requirements. This new study coordinated by Ramazzini is the result of collaboration between scientists from Europe, the United States and South America. In particular, the research involves scientists from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, George Mason University, the University of Bologna, the University of Copenhagen, Boston College, the National Institute of Health, the Federal University of Parana , from the University of California Santa Monica.
