High sea temperatures can cause very heavy rainfall and the risk is the arrival of typhoons and storms

TOKYO – According to what was announced by the Japan Meteorological Agency (Jma) on the basis of measurements conducted since 1982, sea surface temperatures around Japan have reached the record level never recorded for the month of September.

THE SEA IS 1.7 DEGREES WARMER THAN AVERAGE

It's about the second consecutive monthly record after that observed in August.By analyzing the sea surface in 10 maritime areas of the country, Jma confirmed an increase in temperatures of more than 1.7 degrees Celsius, which is the highest level ever recorded. The previous high, recorded in 1999 and 2010, was 0.8 degrees above average.

NOW THE RISK IS TYPHONS AND RAINstorms

The most significant increases were observed southeast of Hokkaido and east of the island of Honshu. The main concern expressed by the Agency is that the high temperatures of the sea surface, by increasing the quantity of water vapor, could cause very heavy rainfall and the multiplication of extreme weather events such as typhoons and storms.
