The annular eclipse will only be visible from the Pacific, but Italian enthusiasts will be able to follow it live streaming:here's what time and where

BOLOGNA – This evening the Moon will position itself exactly in front of the Sun and therefore will effectively cover the entire central part of the star, leaving only the outline exposed and then, in the sky, it will appear as a ring of fire. The phenomenon is called an annular eclipse and will only be visible from the Pacific, Chile and southern Argentina (and part of Antarctica). In Italy it will not be possible to see it, but it will be possible to follow it in live streaming (for example on the portal Time and Date). One of the best observation points will be Easter Island or Rapa Nui.The Moon will begin to overlap with the Sun starting from 5.42pm Italian time (in Chile it will be 12.42pm) while the annularity phase, in which a ring of fire will be seen (visible for seven minutes and 25 seconds), is scheduled for 6.50pm (in the Pacific it will be 1.50pm local time) and will culminate at 8.45pm Italian time (3.45pm local time). In the areas in the center of the annularity band, the moment of maximum coverage will see the solar disk obscured by 93%

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANNULAR AND TOTAL ECLIPSE

The astronomical phenomenon of the annular eclipse occurs when the Moon is near its apogee, i.e. the point of its orbit furthest from the Earth. This is why it appears smaller than the Sun and covers its central part, leaving the edge visible which appears like a ring.On the contrary, when the Moon is closest to the Earth (the maximum phase is called perigee), solar eclipses are total.

THE NEXT SUN ECLIPSE

For enthusiasts and astronomers, the next solar eclipse visible from Italy will occur on March 9, 2025:it will be a partial (and not total) eclipse and will be visible above all in the Centre-North, in particular Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta.
