Uranium in the ground, the Carabinieri seize part of the Sogin site in Rotondella (Matera)

ROME – The Carabinieri of the NOE Ecological Operational Unit of Potenza and of the Radioactive Unit of the CC Command for Environmental Protection and Energy Security of Rome have implemented a decree of seizure, issued by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Matera, rrelating to an area of ​​approximately 600 square meters, within the ITREC nuclear site of Rotondella (Matera) – Trisaia locality – managed by Sogin, a company involved in the decommissioning of Italian nuclear plants and the related management of radioactive waste.
On 21 and 22 February last, staff of the National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ISIN) carried out, with the coordination of the Matera Public Prosecutor's Office, investigations whose results "confirmed the presence of enriched uranium U234-U235 not attributable to the uranium-thorium radionuclides stored at the site managed by Sogin“.

The area subjected to seizure will be secured according to the indications of the Isin.

SOGIN:“CONTAMINATION OF THE TRISAIA SITE NOT LINKED TO DISMANTLING”

Last September 24, the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Ordinary Court of Potenza - District Anti-Mafia Directorate notified Sogin of the conclusion of the preliminary investigations relating, in particular, to the management of the contamination found at the Enea-Sogin site in Trisaia starting from 2015.
Sogin reiterates that this contamination was not generated by the dismantling activities underway at the Trisaia site and that Sogin, as soon as it detected it, immediately reported it to the competent authorities.These are circumstances widely ascertained during the various Service Conferences that have been held from 2015 to today and perfectly in line with the correct conduct interpreted by a State company whose main aim is the protection of the environment, to be placed before any profit logic.
In full application of its institutional mandate and in compliance with internationally relevant experience gained over the years, Sogin will continue to carry out the activities of securing the area and dismantling the Itrec, at the same time placing itself at the disposal of the judicial authorities in a collaborative spirit.
