Park staff are monitoring them because capture could compromise their safety

ROME - The orphaned cubs of the Amarena bear “have been located. The park staff is monitoring them because, at present, their capture could compromise their safety."The Undersecretary for the Environment and Energy Security says so Claudio Barbaro which, among the delegated powers, also has those for biodiversity and protected areas.

The bear, star of the Abruzzo National Park, used to walk with her cubs among the villages of Abruzzo and was an animal that had never caused problems for humans. The person who fired the shot was identified by the park rangers and handed over to the police.

THE REPORT OF THE NATIONAL PARK

“The Orsa Amarena was hit by a shot fired by Mr. Andrea Leombruni on the outskirts of Saint Benedict of the Marsi, outside the Park and the Contiguous Area - reports the social post published during the night -.The Park Guards promptly intervened on the spot, on surveillance duty, given the area where Amarena had landed with her puppies. The Park vet intervened on site with the emergency team, but was only able to ascertain the death of the bear given the severity of the injury. The man was identified by the park rangers and then subjected to investigations by the Carabinieri of the local station, who intervened following the call from the park rangers".

BARBARIAN:“ISOLATED BUT SERIOUS EPISODE, WE WILL CLARIFY IMMEDIATELY

A serious episode, that of the Amarena bear, which we will immediately clarify:an isolated case, however, in an area in which there is no conflict between this symbolic species of the park and the rural populations who have coexisted with these animals for decades.A case which must not however alter the path of in-depth analysis of the situation in Trentino, which is certainly different, where an essential compatibility must be recreated between the presence of man and the specimens protected by EU, national and international regulations".This was stated by the Undersecretary for the Environment and Energy Security Claudio Barbaro who, among the delegated powers, also has those for biodiversity and protected areas.
In Abruzzo the Marsicano Bear has a very small population, 60 units throughout the territory, which reproduces very slowly. These are particularly gentle animals that have always been accustomed to the presence of man.And above all they are controlled and managed, in the best way, directly by the parks”, says Barbaro.
