Could the sacred Ibis be the solution against the American crab that is becoming popular on the Adriatic coasts?According to experts, the remedy could prove worse than the disease

BOLOGNA – The photo (by Mauro Ballarin) is becoming popular on social media in which you can see an Ibis which, in the northern lagoon of Venice, catches a blue crab with its long beak, to devour it.The 'sacred' bird could therefore become a new predator of American crustacean that is terrorizing the navies of the upper Adriatic?Actually, it could prove to be a remedy worse than the disease, because the Ibis, originally from sub-Saharan Africa, is also a foreign animal, competing for years with domestic species such as seagulls and more.Alessandro Sartori, ornithologist and naturalist, explained it to Padua's 'Mattino'.

“AFTER THE IBIS, WHO SHUTS IT OUT ANYMORE?”

“The ibis has been seen eating the American crayfish, another imported misfortune that infests rivers and canals,” explains Sartori. If therefore "the news is very interesting, because the blue crab has these spurs on the sides that make it difficult for everyone to eat them", Sartori however adds that "it took nature many years to create an ecosystem that regulates itself, if the If a man didn't move his pawns and undermine centuries-old balances, it would be better for everyone."In short, It's not necessarily a good idea to use an alien species like the Ibis, which is invasive in Italy today, against another alien species.:assuming that they really can eat so many 'American' crabs, then who would chase them away from their new habitat?
