- Heat and risk of fires put dogs kept on chains in many areas of Italy in danger.
- The aberrant practice continues despite the commitment of organizations that protect animal rights.
- We therefore ask for an extraordinary regional ordinance on the problem.
Thousands of dogs detained at chain are in danger due to the high risk of fires fueled by the strong drought and by the wind in many areas of southern Italy such as Sardinia, Basilicata, Sicily And Calabria. It is these regions that they turn to Green impact, Cave Canem foundation, Save the dogs and other animalsand Animal law Italy to request the urgent adoption of aextraordinary regional ordinance which introduces a clear ban on keeping dogs on chains throughout the territory.
Keeping a dog tied to a chain today is still legal in several areas of Italy, as highlighted by the second report Towards a ban on keeping dogs tied to chains, created by the four organizations, at the forefront since 2021 in asking for the introduction of the ban in all those Italian regions with absent or ineffective regulations.
Dogs on chains, watch out for fires
The risk of fires linked to destructive human activity and illegal practices is felt during the summer in various southern Italian regions. But in reality the problem remains in every corner of Italy with climate changes and the prevailing drought this summer. Thanks to the constant commitment of the four organizations, more than that have already been collected 30 thousand signatures with the campaign Free from chains to ask for a ban on keeping dogs on chains and there have been numerous awareness initiatives that have brought attention to this shameful habit, a sign of people's growing attention towards this issue.
The practice, in addition to being contrary to collective sensitivity, is incompatible with ethological needs of the dog and has negative consequences on the psychological, emotional and physical state of the animal, as stated by numerous Italian and international experts who contributed to the preparation of the report.
The situation in the European Union
Looking at theUnion European, emerge from the dossier positive changes in Slovakia and Germany, countries that in the last year have adopted a ban on keeping dogs on chains with some limited exceptions. Austria and Sweden remain the reference models, while in the rest of the world the virtuous example of California.
The full version of the second edition of the report is available on new site dedicated to the campaign of the four organizations, to be consulted to always be updated and learn, through the interactive map, the specific situation of each Italian region.
