How are the protection of the biodiversity and the energy transition of our country? How to promote both? And why do they both represent fundamental aspects for tackling the most important challenge of our century, namely the search for solutions to reduce and mitigate climate change?Giovanni Mori will talk about these themes, which have become central in our lives, with his guests, in three special editions of the Saturday of News from planet Earth who will keep us company from the end of October to the end of November. The aim of the three episodes is to demonstrate how the physical, economic and social health of the territories and energy sources are factors closely intertwined with each other, as described in the Life talks A2A, to which these specials are linked.
Life talks A2A
Life talks are a meeting path dedicated to the citizens and stakeholders of the group who have the objective of spread the culture of sustainability, promoting coherent and responsible communication between the communities in which the company operates, through the presentations of local sustainability reports and in-depth discussions with researchers, scientists and key opinion leaders. The valorization of the various A2A initiatives for local territories is intertwined with the macro-theme of biodiversity, which this year was chosen by the Life company as the common thread throughout the entire process.
The three episodes will counterbalance two important Life talks:that of Palermo, Sicily, scheduled for the next one October 29th at the Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa;and that of Rapallo, Liguria, scheduled for November 15th toExcelsior Palace Hotel.
First episode:let's talk about biodiversity with Valeria Barbi
He is the guest of the first episode Valeria Barbi, environmental journalist, naturalist and political scientist, as well as a former guest of the Life talks which took place in Sardinia, in Cagliari, last 20 September. It is his task to open this dedicated miniseries and to outline a general picture of the need and benefits of biodiversity, for us human beings, but also for the animal and plant species that populate the planet.
Several themes emerged from the chat. For example, like the pollinating insects have a central role for European agriculture:they depend on their free service approx 15 billion euros of revenue each year. Not only that:also the rewilding and the reintroduction of endangered species can have a decisive effect on combating climate change.
For example, Barbi recalled that "according to the IPCC, rewilding is one of the most efficient mitigation strategies for the climate crisis. It was found that protecting and restoring the populations of just 9 species groups by 2100 could achieve 95 percent of the 500 billion tons of CO2 needed to be removed from the atmosphere, which is what is needed to keep global warming below of the 1.5°C threshold, as required by the 2015 Paris Agreement”.
Proceeding towards the future with the awareness that we are responsible for what will happen to the planet is not impossible. In this, Barbi said she was confident that people and territories can be sensitized and actively involved.
