The regional resolution that would have authorized the 'hunting' of 469 specimens has been suspended.Over 136 thousand signatures had been collected against the measure

ROME – The deer of Abruzzo are safe. The Council of State in fact it accepted the appeal presented by the associations LAV, LNDC Animal Protection And WWF Italy and confirmed the suspension of the resolution of the Regional Council which ordered the killing of 469 deer, including puppies. The affair had aroused great indignation even outside the animal rights and environmentalist world, attracting appeals from numerous personalities of art and culture, as well as 136 thousand signatures with an online petition and tens of thousands of protest emails sent by citizens to the regional administration.

“THE PRONUNCIATION MAY ALSO APPLY TO OTHER REGIONS”

“This is an important precedent to clarify that hunting planning must be based on certain data, collected in the manner required by law.Which did not happen in this case, as confirmed by this ruling from the Council of State. A pronunciation that may also apply to other Regions and concerning other animals,” he says Michele Pezone, the lawyer who handled the appeal presented by LAV, LNDC Animal Protection and WWF Italia.

LAV, LNDC and WWF express satisfaction with the result obtained in defense of animals that risked being killed for no real reason, other than to give yet another gift to the hunting lobby which represents an important electoral base for a certain political party.“The fact that the Council of State considered our reasons valid fills us with satisfaction because it is proof that we were and are right. The Council of State remains a bastion of legality and respect for the rules, always precious when it comes to curbing policies that go against animals and the environment. We dedicate this victory to the hundreds of thousands of citizens who supported our initiatives in favor of Abruzzo's deer and to the millions of tourists who flock to the Region every year attracted by its nature and the wild animals that populate it", declare the Associations.
