Wouldn't it be great to get into the TARDIS of the series Doctor Who of the BBC and take a journey through time and space?wikiHow has been trying to contact the Doctor – no luck so far – but we've managed to find the blueprints to build one of our own, since we've yet to defeat the laws of physics, it won't be any bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. external, but by following these simple steps you will be on your way!
Materials List
- Basic:1u x .075u height
- Corner columns:.1u x 2u height
- Ceiling:.9u x .2u height
- External roof pieces:4 pieces @ .1u width x .1u height x .75u length
- Internal roof pieces:4 pieces @ .1u width x .2u height x .6u length
- Support blocks:4 pieces @ .2u width x .2u length x .1u height
- Roof top:.6u wide x .075u high
- Lantern holder:Based on the size of the lantern.Approximately 3u wide x .075u high
- Side panels:3 pieces @ .7u width x 1.5u height x .05u thickness
- Door Panels: 2 pieces @ .35u wide x 1.5u high x .05u thick
- Door hinges:2
- Door handle:1
- Windows:8 pieces 5u wide x .05u thick
- Vertical trimming:3 pieces 2u high x .1u wide x .02u thick
- Vertical door trim:2 pieces 2u high x .05u wide x .05u thick
- Horizontal trimming:32 pieces 3u length x .1u height x .02u thickness
- Screwdrivers, glue, staples or whatever you need for the size of the finished TARDIS.
- A lantern for the roof.
- Sonic screwdriver (optional)
- View of the disassembled parts. If your TARDIS looks like this when finished, you haven't used enough glue!
-
Determine the final size. It will make a difference in construction, materials and of course cost. Also consider that a full-size replica would be very heavy, so you have to build it where you want it to stay.
- For this article the units of measurement will be referred to as "units" instead of centimeters or inches. For example, instead of 1 cm, the article will use the abbreviation 1u.
- This is the basis for all the relative dimensions you will need to calculate to get the final size.If your TARDIS will have a 4cm square base, you will need to multiply everything by 4.For example, let's say the vertical columns at each corner will be 2u tall on a base of 0.1u.multiply everything by 4 and the final dimensions will be 8cm x 0.4cm x 0.4cm.
-
Recover all the materials. Refer to the "Materials List" section at the bottom of the page, and cut all the pieces so they are ready to assemble before you begin.
- The way the article is set up, it is assumed that you are building a scale model. If you want to build a full-size one, do so safely, using screwdrivers and staples if necessary.

-
Start with the base. Spread it out on a flat surface. If it is small enough to move once the TARDIS is finished, place it on a sheet of paper or other protective material. If it will stay where you are building it, check that the ground is level and dry.Spread a tarpaulin if necessary.
- Base = 1u square x 0.2u high.
-
Add the corner columns and ceiling. This will be the framework for adding everything else, so build it carefully.
-
Mark the corners. With a pencil, mark the inside top of the base at all four corners at 0.05u.For example, if your base is a 4cm square, make a mark every 0.2cm (4 x 0.05 = 0.2).
-
Connect the dots. Draw a line connecting the midpoints of your marks as a guide for placing the other parts of the TARDIS.
-
Attach the columns. Glue the columns to the base so they stay within the guidelines, as shown.
-
Attach the ceiling. Place the ceiling board over the columns, so that the edges are level.
-
Let the TARDIS structure dry and let the glue set.Advertising
-
Build the exterior roof structure. Take the 4 pieces of the outer roof and glue them together to form a frame.
-
Build the structure of the internal part of the roof. Using the 4 inner roof pieces, glue them into a box that fits into the outer roof structure.
- If there are any small holes don't worry, you will eliminate them with filler before painting it.
-
Glue the structure. Center the frame structure above the ceiling and make marks to secure its position.Put glue on the bottom of the frame and glue.Add the four support blocks to the outside corners of the frame, as shown.
-
Attach the top. Put glue on the support blocks and place the roof.It should be aligned with the top of the frames.
-
Alternative roof assembly:
- Replace the frames with individual pieces.Instead of an external and an internal frame plus support blocks, center and glue a 0.7u x 0.1u board and overlap another 0.6u x 0.1u board.
-
Add a block for the lantern. Center and glue this block on top of the roof structure
-
Let dry. Check that the roof is level and let the glue dry.
-
Add a lantern.Advertising
-
Paste them between the columns. For all sides except the door, center the side panels between the columns.Glue these pieces to the base and sides and let dry.
- If they are too large, trim them on one side until they are the right size.
- If they are too small, add a small frame between the columns, and glue the side panels to those frames.
-
Add windows. Glue the window panels on each side except the door. They should fit snugly between the top of the panels and the roof.
-
Add vertical trim. Attach the long vertical strip to the center of each side panel (all 3) and let dry.
-
Add the horizontal finish. Starting 0.05u from the base of the side panel, make a mark every 0.5u.do this on each side of the vertical trims, and on the edges of the side panels.Add horizontal trims to each stitch, as shown.Advertising
-
Build the fixed side. Attach the left door panel, centered on the left vertical column.Glue it to the column and base, and check that it is straight.
- Let dry.
-
Attach the hinges. The TARDIS opens inwards, so glue the hinges to the inside of the right door panel.Center the door panel on the right vertical column, and then glue the hinges to that column.Test it to see if it opens easily.
-
Add windows. Attach a window panel to the left door panel, glue it well to the panel, column and ceiling. For the moving door panel, glue only the bottom part of the window.
-
Add vertical trim.
- Glue the vertical strip to the left door panel so that the right edge of the strip lines up with the right edge of the door panel.
- Glue the vertical strip to the right panel of the door so that the left edge of the strip aligns with the left edge of the door.
-
Add horizontal trim. Starting 0.05u from the base of the door panel, make a mark every 0.5u.do this on each side of the vertical trim part, and on the outside sides of the door panels.Glue a horizontal trim to each point, as you did for the trims on the sides.
-
Let everything dry thoroughly.Advertising
-
Now that you're done, you can customize it. Start painting it with a dark blue-gray.Here is a color swatch that you can use as a reference.
- The official BBC approved color for the TARDIS is Pantone 2955C.
- Cover the windows, unless you want them blue!
-
Add the handle. When the paint is dry, add the handle to the door.
- You can also add a magnetic latch to secure the door, or a door stopper on the base and roof so it can't be opened outward.
- Last the internal part.A golden color could be a great choice.
-
Add signs. Add a sign on top that says.White letters on a black background.
- The sign on the front of the TARDIS says:
-
You are now the proud owner of a TARDIS. Have a good trip!Advertising
