Steps
-
Choose the stitch or stitches you want to use. To find stitch patterns you can:
- Consult a knitting dictionary (a collection of instructions on how to knit to make decorative stitches).
- Search online to find cover templates with instructions.
- Use garter stitch (knit both sides). The result is embossed on both sides of the work. You can also use stockinette stitch (alternating between knit and purl rows) to have a raised cover on one side and plain on the other.
-
Choose the yarn. You can make a blanket with any type of yarn, but there are some general rules:
- The thicker the yarn, the faster the work grows, and therefore the sooner you will finish the blanket.
- The softer the yarn, the more pleasant the blanket will be.
- Some parents may prefer that you only use natural fibers like cotton and wool. However, many people appreciate artificial fibers such as polyester, because they do not require special care (for example for washing).
-
Choose your irons. Most yarn bands suggest the size of needles to use.
-
Make a swatch with your chosen yarn and needles. The typical sample measures approximately 10 x10 cm.
- If you are using a ready-made pattern, you will find the indication of how many stitches and how many rows (rows) to work to obtain the sample of a certain size.Change the size of the needles until you get the right amount of stitches and rows.
- If you are creating the pattern yourself, you can change the size of the needles until you get the result you like. Now, count how many stitches and how many rows there are in a 2.5 x 2.5 cm space of the sample.Multiply these figures by the dimensions that the cover must have (multiply by the centimeters of width and divide by 2.5).This way you will know how many stitches you need to knit and how many rows you need to work to get the blanket of the desired size.
- If you are using a decorative pattern, you may need multiples of a certain number of stitches (for example, multiples of 4 or 5) to get the desired pattern. You could also add some garter or stockinette stitches to both sides of the cover as a border.Round the number of stitches up or down to arrive at the appropriate multiple, and add any edge stitches to the count.
-
Assemble the number of stitches needed for the pattern, or the stitches you calculated based on the sample you made if you are creating your own pattern.
-
Work the entire row, following the pattern you created or the instructions you found.
- Turn the work and continue until you reach the desired length.
-
Close the stitches without tightening too much.
- If you're not sure how to bind off, try this:slip the 1st stitch knitwise without knitting it and knit the 2nd stitch, then insert the tip of the left needle into the slipped stitch.Lift the slipped stitch, pass it over the 2nd knitted stitch and let it fall from the needle.Knit the 3rd stitch and slip the 2nd knitted stitch over the third.Repeat until all stitches are used up, then pull the end of the yarn through the last stitch.
-
If there are any threads sticking out, use a large-eyed needle to pin them into the stitches, and cut off the excess.Advertising
