The blanket stitch is used to work the edges of tablecloths, drape capes, blankets, etc., or to hem any type of material, including clothes. The blanket stitch is similar to the method used for the buttonhole stitch, but there is more space between the individual stitches in the blanket stitch and definitely the need for a regular pattern.

Advice

  • A thicker thread is usually ideal for blanket stitch, because the stitch itself is often a decorative element as well as a method of hemming the end of the fabric.
  • To blanket stitch around a decorative pointed piece on a quilt, hold the stitches flat by anchoring the stitch to the back of the quilt design and bring the thread up as if it were new thread.
  • Variations of the blanket stitch include the knotted blanket stitch, the knotted hem, and the chained hem.
  • Try making it around the edges of a pillow for a nice decorative effect.
