The Punch Needle, or needle punching, is a craft or artistic technique that allows you to wind a sewing thread, a wool thread or a ribbon forming a pattern or design through the fabric. This movement gives the pattern the appearance of a carpet. The origins of punching are still debated;some claim that it has been known since Ancient Egypt, when needles were made from the hollow bones of birds, others believe that this technique comes from the Old Believer community in Russia, for others it has origins in Germany or England. It is used to embroider objects, create tapestries, cushions, carpets and other decorations or craft elements.Needle punching can be a hobby or a real job. Before creating your object, you need to know how to use this technique.
-
Choose a design. You can purchase it and transfer it to fabric, or you can draw it yourself.
- The fabric must be a mix of polyester and cotton.
- Cut it so that you leave at least 10cm of border on all sides of the pattern.
- Draw the design on the back of the fabric using a permanent marker.
-
Choose an embroidery hoop that fits your design perfectly. You must not cover it or touch it in any way.
-
Place the fabric on the smallest circle of the hoop, holding the binding ring upwards. At this point, place the largest circle on top, so as to block the fabric. To ensure that the latter stays in place, make sure you tighten the two circles well.Adjust them according to your needs.
-
Insert the wire into the punch pen. This is made up of a hollow internal part and a depth gauge. It has two sides:the part that penetrates the fabric is blunt and contains the eye.
- Slide the thread up to the eye of the needle, passing through the internal cavity of the instrument. Then let it pass through it.Choose the color and number of threads based on your design.

-
Hold the punch as if it were a pencil, with the blunt side facing the fabric you want to punch. At the other end of the pen, let the thread rest on your finger, making sure nothing is impeding its movement.
-
Punch out the design. Place the pointed end of the needle on the pattern and pierce the fabric, until the depth gauge touches it;at this point pull the needle towards you, without extracting it completely.
-
Move the tip of the needle slightly to make the next hole. It must always remain in contact with the fabric.Drill it again, until the depth gauge touches it.Then, slowly bring the needle back towards you.
-
Repeat this process until the drawing is complete. Start from the outer outline, then fill the main elements from the inside out, always one row at a time.Finish by sewing the background.
-
Finish the stitching by slowly pulling the needle out of the fabric. Leave about 1.5 cm of thread and cut the remaining one.Pin the wire to hold it in place.
-
Open the hoop and remove the fabric with the completed design.Advertising
Advice
- Always hold the needle perpendicular to the fabric.
