Knitting is a simple, fun art form that's great for creating useful clothing, like scarves. If crocheting is new to you, perhaps a scarf will seem way out of your reach.Instead, a simple scarf can be made with a few easy crochet techniques.
-
Get the materials. For a crochet beginner, it's important to start with the right materials.Your scarf should be around 150cm, so you will need at least 180cm of twisted yarn, a size 8 crochet hook and a darning needle to finish the scarf at the end.You will also need scissors to cut the scarf from the thread at the end.
-
Hold the crochet hook correctly. Although the way of holding the crochet hook varies from person to person, it is usually held in the hand like a pen.Your thumb and index finger should rest on the flat part of the hook, while the rest of your fingers remain behind.Always hold the crochet hook in your right hand, even if you are left-handed.Then you will use your left hand to make a loop with the wire and hold your creation.[1]
-
Make the first ring. To create the beginning of your foundation row, you will need to tie a slip knot and slide it onto your hook.To do this:
- Wrap the end of the thread (a few cm from the end) around the index finger of your left hand in a loop.
- At the top of the finger/ring you need to thread the middle part of the wire into a second loop through the first.
- Remove your finger and insert the first ring you just removed to pull it and tighten the knot.
- Place the knot at the end of the hook and adjust it by pulling on the threads to tighten or loosen.
-
Add the first chain. To make a chain, hold the loose thread in your left hand and use the crochet hook in your right hand to form it.
- Keep the thread tight, and wrap the hook under the thread.
- Clip the section of yarn wrapped around the hook (called the yarn over).
- Pull the thread you hooked through the first loop.
-
Work the base row. Use the same pattern you used to make the first chain to make the entire foundation row.The base row should be about 12-18 chain stitches wide, depending on how wide you want your scarf. To add more chains repeat the same operation:keep the thread pulled, wrap the hook under the thread to create a loop, hook the thread and pull it through the loop that is already ready on the hook.Every time you do this, you create a chain.[2]Advertising
-
Begin your second row. Adding the second row slightly changes the pattern used for the base row but is still very similar.Look:
- Pass the tip of the hook through the second chain (not the first, skip one).
- Wrap the hook under the taut thread in your left hand and hook it (pass the thread over it).
- Pass the thread through the second chain;this should create two loops on the hook.
-
Finish the second row. Use the process mentioned above to complete the second row of your scarf.Follow this order:pass the hook through the chain, pass the thread over and through to create two loops, then pass the thread over and through both loops, and you're done with a chain.
-
Add the third row. When you get to the end of the second row, you modify the chain pattern slightly, but this third modification will remain the same until the end of the scarf.Start by adding a single crochet at the end of the second row and then:
- Insert the hook through the center of the first chain stitch in the second row.
- Wrap the hook around the yarn to pull it over, but this time hook the yarn down, through the center.
- Pull the yarn over, hooking the yarn down, and pull it through the two loops on the hook.
-
Finish the third row. For the rest of the row use the modified directions to add to your chains.Remember to count the chains so that your scarf is even to the end;the first chain stitch in each row does not count towards the total number of chain stitches per row.
-
Add the desired number of rows to complete the scarf. Use the same pattern to create the third row of chain stitch for the rest of the scarf.Work as much or as little as you like, just make sure you add the same number of chains in each row. When you reach your desired length, add a final row but don't cut the thread yet.
-
Finish the scarf. Trim the excess thread about 7cm from the work, leaving the last loop intact on the hook.Pass the thread over the hook one last time through the last loop, and pull the end to tighten the final knot. Then, use the darning needle to pull the end of the thread into the last row of the scarf, you can cut a little more thread at the end instead of hiding it inside the scarf.Once you've tucked the end of the thread into the scarf, your work is done![3]Advertising
Advice
- Most beginners end up with a scruffy piece of crochet fabric that looks nothing like what they imagined;don't despair!Just like painting and sculpting, it will take some practice before you are able to create crochet projects that are perfectly smooth.
