Steps
-
Make sure the countertop is covered and then choose a bar of soap. Any type will work, however, a large bar of soap is easier to handle and work with.
-
Choose a knife. The soap is soft, so there is no need to use a sharp knife.Plastic knives, spoons or ice cream cartons are fine, especially if children will be making the sculptures. This will avoid possible accidents caused by sharp knives.
-
Choose what you want to carve. A turtle or fish is often chosen by beginners, as their shape is similar to that of bar soap. You can also opt for other subjects like birds, hearts, boats and whatever comes to mind.
-
Draw the outline of the subject on one side of the soap. You can do this with a pencil or directly using a knife, a wooden stick or a toothpick.
-
Remove the soap on the outside of the template with a carving tool. Be sure to remove small portions, as it is much easier to remove the soap than to try to put it back once removed. If you remove too much at once, the bar of soap could break.
-
Add details and refine the sculpture.
-
When you're done, wet your fingers and smooth the surface of the soap to make it more uniform. Let it dry and harden for a day before using it.Advertising
Advice
- Use a new bar of soap instead of an old, dried one.Dry soap is brittle and may crumble.
- Don't throw away the scraps, you can make liquid soap with them.Be careful and don't rush to finish the job.
- Repair cracks and blemishes using a toothpick.Wet the damaged area and smooth it with your fingers.
- Ivory soap is perfect for beginners. It is indeed large, soft and easy to work with and find.
