Handling the Doll

  1. Porcelain dolls are very fragile, therefore they must be handled with great care. This is not a necessary precaution if it is a children's toy. However, if it is a collectible or display doll, it is always better to wear a pair of cotton gloves when handling it, because skin sebum could stain porcelain and clothes and attract dust.[1]
  2. When you clean or dress it, do not place it directly on the table but on a towel:this way you will protect it from dirt and any stains and, by adding a protective layer, you will prevent it from breaking. [2]
  3. If it's a collectible doll, or you want to keep it in a safe place, place it in its packaging or in a ventilated container. You can purchase a doll display cabinet online that's right for you, but if you're a smoker, store it in an airtight container to prevent stains. The doll should always be protected from sunlight and stored at room temperature, not extreme temperatures.[3]
    • Place it not too close to the windows, to prevent high temperatures and strong light coming from outside from ruining it.
  4. Use a special comb and proceed carefully, keeping the hairline dry, otherwise the glue could lose its grip and the wig could come off.Straight synthetic hair can be brushed gently with a wire brush, while curly hair should not be brushed, otherwise it may get damaged.[4]

Clean the Doll

  1. Do this regularly, using a duster or a large, soft brush. This way you will keep it clean and you will be able to avoid having to do a deep cleaning.[5] If there is any stubborn dust, you can place the doll in a nylon stocking and then vacuum it, or use an air compressor set to its lowest setting. If you don't use the sock, your hair could get frizzy, tangled and damaged:in case you don't have one available, you can cover her hair with your hands.[6]
  2. You can clean it delicately with a dry cloth or sponge, using, if necessary, a small amount of water, but do not overdo it.Rub the cloth or sponge over the doll, making sure to rub, not scrape, or you may risk removing paint – especially makeup on the face.[7]
    • You can clean crevices and hard-to-reach places (such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears) with a cotton swab or toothbrush.Be sure to proceed gently, especially around the lashes.[8]
  3. If there are any, you can try to remove them gently, using a drop of mild detergent diluted in water to rub the stain.Always test on a hidden spot on the doll first, as soap or baking soda may remove the paint.[9]
  4. If they are particularly dirty, you can gently remove the glue from the wig with fingers moistened with water.Use water and glass cleaner to clean synthetic hair and a mild detergent for human hair.Once the wig has dried completely you can reattach it with white glue.[10]

Repair the Doll

  1. In case they are cloudy and crystallized, you can repair them using a drop of sewing machine oil.Spread it on the eyes, then place the doll face down, leaving it to act for about an hour.Be sure to check it from time to time to make sure that oil has not dripped onto the porcelain. It is very important to use only a small amount and that it does not touch other parts of the doll:If you're not careful, sewing machine oil can cause cracks.[11]
  2. Repair any holes by hand sewing them.If you notice dirt or stains on your clothes, you can take them off and wash them, trying to remove any accessories first.Hand wash them in cold water and let them air dry.[12]
  3. If it has cracks or you feel like you can't fix it yourself, take it to one of the many doll repair shops. You can search online for “doll hospitals” or “doll restoration” in your area to find one that is right for you.
