Baby hats are a moderately difficult project for those new to crochet, but with a little practice you can make them in various shapes using just a few basic stitches.
-
Tie the yarn onto the hook. Create one chain using one end of the thread.
- The part of the thread not attached to the hook will remain as a reminder and is called the "tail".To make the cap you will use the other extension.
-
Two chains. Make it two chain stitches starting from the stitch on the hook.
-
Form a circle. Work six low points in the second chain starting from the hook. This way you will have completed the first round.
- Note that the second chain from the hook is the stitch created by tying the yarn at the beginning.
-
Single crochet in each stitch. To complete the second round, make two single crochets in each stitch of the previous round.
- Once finished, you will have 12 stitches.
- Mark the last stitch of the round with a plastic marker. If not, use a safety pin or paper clip.
-
Single crochet the third round. Make a single crochet in the first stitch of the previous round. Then work two in the next stitch.Repeat this pattern to complete the round, working one single crochet in each odd-numbered stitch and two in each even-numbered stitch.
- This time you will end up with 18 stitches.
- Move the marker to the last stitch of this round.
-
Increase the size on the next round. Work a single crochet in the first stitch of the previous round.Do another one in the next point. In the third, work two single crochets.Repeat this pattern – one single stitch, one single and two in the same stitch continuing to the end of the round.
- Once done, you will have 24 single crochets.
- Move the marker to the last stitch of the round before continuing.
-
Work more single stitches for the fifth round. Single crochet in each of the first three stitches of the previous round.Next, make two single crochets in the fourth stitch.Repeat until the end of the round.
- You should now have a total of 30 points.
- Mark the last stitch of the fifth round.
-
Increase the number of points in the next four rounds. From the sixth to the ninth round you will continue to increase the points on which you will work a single crochet, alternating them with those on which you will work two stitches.
- In the sixth round, work a single stitch in the first four stitches of the previous round, then make two in the fifth stitch.Repeat until you run out of stitches.
- In the seventh round, work a single stitch in the first five stitches of the previous round, then two single stitches in the sixth.Repeat until the end of the round.
- For the eighth round, work a single stitch in the first six stitches, then two single crochets in the seventh.Repeat this pattern.
- On the ninth round, work a single crochet in the first seven stitches, then two single crochets in the eighth stitch.Repeat until the end of the round.Note that you will need to have 54 points at the end.
- You should mark the end of each round as you work.
-
Complete 16 more laps. For the remaining rounds, you will need to single crochet in each stitch from the previous round.
- Each of the previous rounds must always have 54 stitches.
- Always move the marker to the last stitch of the previous round, to help you keep in mind where you are in the labor economy.
- Repeat this pattern for rounds 10 to 25.
-
Drop. For the final round you will have to perform a decrease in each of the points of the previous round.
-
Tie the thread. Cut leaving a 5cm tail.Pull through the loop on the hook and form a knot.
- Hide the tail between the stitches and you've finished the hat.

Tie the yarn onto the hook. Create one chain using one end of the thread.
- The part of the thread not attached to the hook is not used and is called the "tail".To make the hat you will use the other end of the yarn.
-
Four chains. Make one chain of four stitches starting from the ring created on the hook.
-
Form a circle. Make one chain joining both circles of your original chain, which will be the fourth from the hook. This way you will connect the first and last points and you will have the starting circle.
-
Make a double crochet in the center of the ring. Make two chains. Then work 13 high tops in the center of the circle created previously.Slip stitch in the first and last stitch, thus completing the round.
- Note that the first two chain stitches do not count on this round.
-
Double the double crochets. For the second round, work two double crochets in each of the points from the previous round.Close with a slip stitch as previously.
- Once done, you will have 26 points.
- Note that in this step you do not have to turn the work. The points must go in the same direction as the previous ones.
-
Work an alternating pattern of double crochets for the third round. Make two chain stitches, then a double crochet in the first stitch of the previous round, then two double crochets in the following one, followed by a single double crochet. For the rest of the round, double crochet in one stitch, followed by a single double crochet in the next. The last stitch must be made up of two double crochets.
- Once you complete the round you should have 39 stitches.
- Join the first and last stitch with a slip stitch.
-
Increase points in the fourth round. Make two chain stitches, then work a double crochet in each of the two previous points, then two double crochets in the third.Repeat this pattern until you finish with two double crochets.
- This time you will have 52 stitches at the end of the round.
- Join the first and last stitches with a slip stitch.
-
Complete rounds 5 through 13. The pattern of each round will be exactly the same. Two chain stitches to start, then a double crochet in each stitch of the previous round.Join the first and last stitch with a slip stitch.
- Each round must still have 52 stitches.
-
Turn and continue. Two chain stitches, then turn the work.Continue by making a double crochet in each stitch of the previous round and conclude with a slip stitch.
- Rounds 15 and 16 are also worked according to this pattern, but you will not need to turn the piece.
- Each of the three rounds must remain with 52 stitches.
-
Make the border. A chain, then one single crochet in the first stitch of the previous round.Follow this pattern by alternating a chain stitch with a single crochet.
- Do not skip any stitches from the previous round.
- Join the first and last stitch with a slip stitch.

Advice
- Choose a soft yarn.
- Please note that these hats are suitable for newborns up to three months of age.To make one for an older child you will need to increase a couple of stitches at a time, so that the circumference also increases.Make two more turns to create a taller cap.[4]
- For a newborn, the circumference of the cap should be 30.5 to 35.5 cm and the height 14-15 cm.
- For a baby aged 3 to 6 months, the circumference should be 35.5 to 43 cm and the height 16.5 to 18 cm.
- For a 6 to 12 month old baby, the circumference will be 40.5 to 48 cm and the height should be approximately 19 cm.
