With the garter stitch you obtain a resistant and elastic yarn, which does not curl.It is ideal, for example, for making garments such as scarves.Regardless of what you want to create, the garter stitch is a basic stitch used by many beginner knitters, and learning it will definitely come in handy.

Steps
-
Get everything you need together. If you're learning to knit, thicker needles and chunky yarn will make it easier. If you are working with finer yarn and needles, try to keep the stitches loose, to give you enough wiggle room.
-
Decide how to hold the thread. You can choose between Continental and English style.Try them both when you're starting out and see which one you feel better with. These are English style knitting instructions, but can easily be adapted to Continental style.
-
Hold the needle with the stitches cast on on the left, and hold the other one with your right hand.
-
Insert the tip of the right needle into the first stitch of the left one, so that the right needle crosses the left one from behind.
-
Make sure the yarn is anchored behind the needles.
-
Hold the thread tightly in your right hand, wrap it, counterclockwise, around the tip of the right needle, so that it remains between the two needles.
-
Begin to delicately insert the tip of the right needle into the first stitch facing you, bringing with it the one you created on the needle.
-
Slowly slide the right needle in front and then up, so that it rests on top of the left needle. Don't pull too hard, or you will slip the right needle completely.
-
Proceeding very carefully, slide the new stitch onto the right needle so that the old stitch on the left comes off. Pull the thread well after each stitch, so that they all fit firmly on the needle, but not so tight that you can't thread them with the other one.
-
Note that the first stitch worked is on the right needle. Follow the same process with all the other stitches cast on.
-
When all the stitches are transferred to the right needle, you will have finished your first row of stitches.
-
Switch needles so that you hold the one with all the stitches in your left hand. Now you can start working the second row, exactly as you did with the first.By doing this you will obtain the garter stitch.Advertising
Advice
- This is a short poem to remember as you knit:“Behind, around, above and below.”
- You will soon find that the movements will become more fluid as you get used to them, and you will start to work faster.
- You can make a scarf with garter stitch. For further instructions, see this article on wikiHow...

Warnings
- The number of stitches on each needle must always be the same.If you realize you have a few extra stitches, the mistake was probably made at the beginning of the row.The first shirt (like all the others) should have a "choker" just underneath, with the ball of yarn coming down from the center of the crewneck. However, if you have fewer stitches, you may have "lost" them or slipped them on by mistake.
